Mother’s Day UK

March 30, 2025

Mother’s Day in the UK, traditionally called “Mothering Sunday,” It is held on the 4th Sunday in Lent, and originally it was a day when people returned to their ‘mother’ church — the main church or cathedral in the area, or the church in which you were baptised. It was a happy reunion of sorts, a break from the rigorous Lenten fasting, and a day when families would gather.

Over time, this religious event morphed into a more secular celebration. Workers on wealthy farms and estates, often children often working as domestic servants, were given the day off to visit their mothers. They would pick spring wildflowers along the way to present as gifts, with violets being traditionally depicted.

Fast forward to today, Mother’s Day in the UK is much like elsewhere in the world, and while it is on a different day, it follows the American tradition and is celebrated with cards, flowers, and breakfast in bed. It’s a day of pampering mums, thanking them for their endless patience and love, often with homemade cards and overcooked toast prepared by little hands. It’s a day filled with laughter, hugs, and perhaps the odd burnt pancake — a delightful celebration of mothers and motherhood in all its forms.
