Development Advisor

The Development Advisor (DA) provides career counseling for all members of Team Barksdale, with specialized knowledge in retraining and various force management programs. The DA serves as the primary source for Team Barksdale’s professional development needs. Mandatory development courses are offered on a scheduled basis. Mandatory courses include Informed Decision Seminar (IDS), First Term Enlisted Course (FTEC), Junior Enlisted Foundations (JEFC 300), NCO Foundations (NCOFC 500), and SNCO Foundations (SNCOFC 700). The DA will assist Squadrons and Groups with providing relevant career information during Commander’s Calls, when requested, as well as hosting base briefings to cover new development and force management initiatives.

Ensure members are equipped with complete and accurate information prior to making career impacting decisions, and to develop Total Force professionals for greater responsibilities.

Course Descriptions

First Term Enlisted Course (FTEC)

Course Length: 5 Days

Who: First term enlisted members; attendance mandatory within 45 days of arrival to first duty station.

Description: The First-Term Enlisted Course (FTEC) is a five-day course which provides informative briefings and training for newly assigned first-term enlisted members. Military professionalism, Enlisted Force Structure, resiliency, and financial management are some of the topics addressed during FTEC. Upon completion of the course, members will be better able to transition out of the technical training environment and into the operational Air Force. Airmen are required to attend all 5 scheduled days and will NOT be able to attend personal appointments during this time.

NCO Foundations Course (NCOF 500)

Length of Course: 5 Days

Who: Eligibility begins 2 years post ALS but before NCOA

Course Description: This course is a mandatory prerequisite for NCOA. The NCO Foundations Course 500 provides students with the skills and knowledge needed to lead by setting the example. It also enhances the students’ capacity to continually advance factors that shape organizational culture and offers guidance that empowers students to reflect on their behaviors in relation to the Airmen Leadership Qualities. The NCOF500 assists students in grasping the connection between attention to detail, establishing impactful communications and fostering a culture of trust. It promotes the realization that asking the appropriate questions involves understanding how to utilize the answers effectively.

Informed Decision Seminar

Length of Course: 2 hrs

Who: This seminar per AFI 36-2670, Total Force Development, is mandatory for first-term and second-term enlistees within 12-15 months of their date of separation.

Description: This seminar is an educational experience specifically designed to enhance one’s knowledge of Air Force benefits, highlighted program requirements, and processes. The goal is to ensure personnel obtain the needed information to make the best decision for them, their family, and their subordinates as they come close to the end of their enlistment.

SNCO Foundations Course (SNCOF 700)

Length of Course: 5 Days

Who: Eligibility begins 2 years post ALS but before NCOA

Course Description: This course is a mandatory prerequisite for SNCOA. The SNCO Foundations Course 700 provides students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to develop, advise and lead teams successfully, and facilitates technical expertise for transitioning from first-line supervisors and trainers to leaders of teams. The SNCOFC700 assists students in engaging in strategic leadership at the 9-skill level, offering a rich arsenal of influence tactics for changing people’s viewpoints and behaviors. It assists students in learning how to build and maintain social relationships to maximize their informal power and influence in an organization. The course goes beyond managing into a proactive stance that will take the organization forward.

Junior Enlisted Foundations Course (JFEC 300)

Length of Course: 5 Days

Who: Eligibility begins one year post FTAC but before ALS

Course Description: This course is a mandatory prerequisite for ALS. The Junior Enlisted Foundations Course 300 bridges the gap between tech school and Airman Leadership School. The course provides students with the foundational skills and knowledge needed to conform to standards, customs and courtesies, and offers guidance to help enhance the students’ focus on becoming highly efficient career field and 5-skill level agents. The JEFC300 empowers Airman to reflect on their behaviors in relation to the Airmen Leadership Qualities. It facilitates the journey to developing supervisory and leadership skills, developing the competency of leading individuals and teams, and understanding the guardrails and guidelines of supervision.

First Term Airmen Center (FTAC)

The First Term Airmen Center is designed to aid all first-duty-stationed airmen with their transition from a training environment into a mission oriented environment using the airmen’s skills, knowledge and training gained from technical school. FTAC sessions are 5 days in length, Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. All airmen must report to FTC within 30 days of arriving at Barksdale and must attend the MPS briefing prior to the session.
