The Outdoor Recreation Center at Ellsworth Air Force Base is your gateway to all-season adventures in the Black Hills.
From camping and hiking to climbing and snow sports–whatever calls your name– our experts are here to help guide and equip you with everything you need to explore the outdoors.

Whether you’re wanting to explore the outdoors, plan an event, or need a shovel for your first South Dakota winter, Outdoor Rec has all the Equipment you need to LIVE, WORK, & PLAY at Ellsworth Air Force Base.
Making a Reservation
Rental reservations can be made up to 30 days in advance. All reservations require a one-day deposit that goes towards the final cost of the rental. Any remaining balance is due when the item is picked up.
Please note that an item rented for Saturday or Sunday is considered a weekend rental. The item must be picked up on Friday after 1300L and returned on Monday before 1200L.
Cancelling a Reservation
72 hour notice is required for refund. If less than 72 hour notice is given, the deposit is forfeited. There will be no refunds due to weather.
Pick-Up
- Monday-Thursday 1300—1630
- Friday 1300—1730
Returning Items
- Items must be returned by 1200 hrs, anything late will be subject to a late fee.
- All Equipment and Campers returned with full sewage and/or excessively dirty are subject to a minimum $50 surcharge.

Rental Equipment
Outdoor Recreation offers a variety of rental equipment to include; outdoor adventure equipment, watercraft, home maintenance equipment, camping equipment, trailers, RVs, party items and sporting equipment, and winter rentals.
Information, Tickets, and Tours
Located at Outdoor Recreation office, you can get information and tickets to local events and attractions. You can also get discounts on theme parks, hotels, and more for your next vacation! Ellsworth Outdoor Recreation also provides ticket sales for events at The Monument Civic Center!
Disc Golf Course
Located in Memorial Park (across the street from the Rushmore Center on Ellsworth St.) enjoy our free to use disc golf course that takes you around the beautiful Base Lakes!

Adventure Programming and Classes
Discover the beauty of the Black Hills with Outdoor Recreation. We offer classes on hiking, skiing, biking, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, rafting, and much more!
Lakes and Pavilions
Memorial part contains two gorgeous lakes, a 1.5 mile loop for running and walking, a disc golf course, and several covered pavilions. The pavilions have grills, picnic tables, and plenty of space for your next barbecue.
Recreational Lodging
While visiting the local area, we offer two venues to stay at. Cedar Lodge offers a queen size bed, cable TV, Wi-Fi, washer and dryers, and more! Fam Camp offers water and electrical hookups, Wi-Fi, showers and a pet walking area.
