Real ID Act Information
As of November 14, 2016, New Mexico started issuing driver’s licenses and identification cards that comply with the federal Real ID Act of 2005 as well as non-compliant driving authorization cards.
On October 1, 2020, the federal government will require your driver’s license or ID card to be Real ID compliant if you wish to use it as identification to board an aircraft or enter federal facilities where ID is required.
Existing New Mexico driver’s licenses (issued before REAL ID) and ID cards will continue to be accepted until expiration or October 1, 2020, whichever is sooner.
When you renew your current New Mexico license, you will need to choose which credential you will be applying for and bring the required documents. To obtain a Real ID license or ID card, you must present proof of identity, proof of identity number and two proofs of address in person at the MVD one time, even if you did so prior to Real ID implementation.
There is no rush. You can wait until your next renewal or until you need to make a change to your name or address.

What is the Real ID Act?
What is the Real ID Act? In response to acts of terrorism committed against the United States, and in an effort to ensure the safety of citizens, Congress passed the REAL ID Act of 2005. The REAL ID Act is implemented through federal regulations administered by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The Real ID Act promotes security in the issuance of licenses and identification cards, and deters identity theft and fraud by requiring all states to meet certain physical and procedural security standards for production and issuance of Driver’s Licenses (DL) and Identification Cards (ID). The Act also requires certain documentation standards, including authentication and verification standards for proof of identity, date of birth, Social Security number, residence, and lawful status or presence.
Why do I Need a Real ID Compliant License or ID Card?
Access to certain federally controlled facilities (federal laboratories, military bases, nuclear power plants) or activities (flying on commercial aircraft) requires a DL or ID issued by a state determined to be in compliance with the REAL ID Act.
Do I need a Passport in order to Board a Plane?
At this time, a New Mexico driver’s license or identification card is considered a valid identification document that can be used to board a plane. DHS is in the process of evaluating what documents can be used to board a plane.
