Next Generation Uniformed Services ID Card
The Department of Defense is transitioning from its current paper-based Uniformed Services Identification (USID) card to a more secure, next-generation USID card. The Next Generation USID card will incorporate an updated design and security features to deter counterfeiting and fraud and will be printed on a plastic cardstock
Note:
Initial issuance of the Next Generation USID card will begin on July 31, 2020, at select DoD ID card facilities, with phased implementation at all DoD ID card facilities projected to be complete in December 2020.
USID cards are issued to retired and reserve members, dependent family members of Uniformed Services members, and other eligible individuals in accordance with DoD policy to facilitate access to benefits, privileges, and DoD bases. The Next Generation USID card does not change the populations who are eligible to receive the current card.
Note:
Currently-issued USID cards remain valid through their expiration date. In an effort to limit the impact on ID card issuance facilities, cards will not be reissued solely for the purpose of obtaining the Next Generation USID card.
Since the Next Generation USID card will not be available at all DoD ID card facilities until December 2020, and sites are currently operating under constrained conditions as a result of COVID-19 to keep both cardholders and operators safe, individuals with an indefinite (INDEF) expiration date on their current USID card should wait until summer 2021 to have their Next Generation USID card issued.

A CRBA is a document certifying the US citizenship of a person born abroad to US citizen parent(s) who meet the requirements for transmitting citizenship under the Immigration and Nationality Act (INA). The CRBA must be completed before the child’s 18th birthday. It is recommended for parents to apply for the CRBA as soon as possible after the child’s birth.
The US Embassy in London now offers an online eCRBA application. Please click here more information.
Official Passport
Official Passports are obtained when a member is traveling to a country that requires an Official Passport upon entry. Please refer to the DoD Foreign Clearance Guide for up-to-date information about your upcoming travel. Official Passports are only to be used for official travel (PCS, TDY, deployments, etc.). When applying for an Official Passport, applicants will need to provide a bona fide need. Passports are no longer issued just because or in preparation for future travel.
Obtaining orders that specifically state a country requiring an Official Passport per the DoD Foreign Clearance Guide is the easiest way to obtain an Official Passport.
When orders are unavailable, applicants may request an Official Passport with the following options:
- A Memorandum in Lieu of Orders (MILO) (Individuals or groups less than 35)
- A Deployment/Movement Memorandum (Groups of 35+)
- A Passport Waiver Request
Please review all up-to-date memo’s and templates by clicking here.
Please call or E-mail our office for further information or guidance on the options listed above. Please contact our office as soon as possible if your travel is imminent.
Social Security Cards
The RAF Lakenheath Passport Office can help members apply for a replacement SSN card, request for a name change on a current SSN card, or obtain a new SSN card for a newborn.
You may also send your application and documents into the embassy to request, replace, or change your name on your SSN card. Find more information by clicking here.
Corrections to Passports
If your passport was printed with the incorrect information, you will need to apply for a replacement for correction. Please book an appointment for the passport you are needing to be corrected and follow the appropriate checklist. In most cases, applying for a correction is free.
You may also be eligible to correct your passport through the US Embassy in London. Find more information by clicking here.
