The McElveen Library aims to provide a complete information center to aid with mission essential and educational resources to accomplish the Air Force mission, connect units to specific, relevant courses and resources, increase productivity, fulfill training requirements and provide all patrons a safe, studious, and pleasant environment conducive to lifelong learning.
About the McElveen Library
McElveen Library is a full media resource center providing resources in a large variety of areas and different mediums. The McElveen Library has been enhancing the literary collection with digital books. In a digital age, it is easier than ever to provide premium content to our patrons “online” lending popular and classic eBooks, audiobooks, and establish interactive multimedia with tablets and with other electronic reading devices through Overdrive. Some of our other plans include creating individual or small group multi-purpose rooms that can be used for study, expanding our technological offerings to better suit the needs of an ever-changing Air Force, and a variety of other changes designed to make the library a more effective resource center.
Children and Teens
McElveen ILC is committed to providing quality programs and facilities for the youth of Shaw AFB. There are two components that make up the Youth Services division of McElveen ILC – The Children’s World and the Teen Area. The Children’s World consists of an extensive collection of emerging reader books, fiction, and nonfiction books, Peek-A-Book interactive learning software for children, and an arts and craft area. The Teen Area features a collection of young adult fiction/nonfiction materials.

Patron Registration
McElveen Library borrowing privileges are issued to military members, retirees, civilian personnel and affiliated students. Registering patrons specify the dependents authorized to use their accounts at the time of registration. McElveen Library privileges are issued for 1 year periods. Students, not otherwise eligible, register each term.
Library Policies
Lending Periods
Library materials can be renewed twice unless they have been placed on hold by other library patrons. Renewal requests can be done over the phone during library hours unless the materials are overdue.

Overdue Materials
McElveen Library does not charge overdue fines. The library sends out a courtesy email on the day of the item’s due date. First and second overdue notices are sent to patrons 7 and 14 days after the due date. Third notices for military members are sent to their first sergeant or commander 21 days after the due date.
Lost or Damaged Materials
Patrons must replace all materials that are lost, damaged, or destroyed while checked out to their account, as per AFI 34-150 3.10.6.
Patron Conduct Policies
- Patrons must abide by the provisions of the “Computer Use Policy” at the Library. This policy includes, but is not limited to, paying for all computer printouts.
- Military Identification cards must be shown in order to use library resources. Library patrons should produce identification upon request from the library staff.
- Children under the age of 12 cannot be left unattended in the library. The library staff will not act in the capacity of a parent or caregiver by providing supervision of unattended children inside/outside of the library. In the event that a child/children are left unattended in the library, Security Forces will be contacted to escort the child/children to their respective parent or legal guardian.
