South Carolina First Steps 4K Program on Shaw
The CDC is proud to partner with South Carolina’s First Steps to offer a comprehensive 4K program that will allow every child to be prepared for success in school. The 4 year old year is a critical window of development during which much of a child’s potential is shaped. By creating a collaborative effort between family, caregivers, and educators during this critical year, a child can arrive at kindergarten prepared with confidence, skills, and knowledge to succeed.
To qualify for the 4K program without tuition cost, your child must meet the following requirements:
- Be 4 years old on or before September 1.
- Complete a registration/eligibility form and be approved.

Available Care
Part Day Enrichment is offered based on participation. Classes are available for three, four, and five year-old children. The program is geared toward early childhood development, focusing on all skill areas. Classrooms are equipped with a complete line of age-appropriate educational toys, supplies, books and equipment. Price is determined by family income.
With today’s hectic, fast-paced life-style, the need for quality hourly child care is more important than ever before. With that in mind, Hourly Care is available at the CDC for children 12 months – 5 years old by reservation.
We have added the following to increase flexibility to our programs for today’s needs:
- Allow families with medical appointments to make a request for hourly care as soon as their appointment is established.
- Take hourly care on a walk-in basis when available.
- Offer families the availability to make reservations for designated hourly care spaces up to four weeks in advance.
- Refer families who can’t be served in the Child Development Center to the Family Child Care staff for assistance in finding hourly care.
It is important for families to remember once they have the reservation, they either need to use it or cancel it. If not, they will be charged the regular hourly fee for one hour after the first occurrence. In addition, the Child Development Center will not accept requests for hourly care from families who make reservations and display a pattern of not using them.
Parental Advisory Committee
Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) Meetings are held the 3rd Wednesday of every month at noon in the CDC Multi-Purpose room at the CDC unless otherwise advised. Parents are encouraged to come and voice concerns or ask questions. A light lunch is provided.
