The goal of Transition Assistance Program (TAP) is to equip separating and retiring military and civilian personnel and their families with the skills and knowledge necessary for a smooth, successful transition into the private sector.

The emphasis of the program is on preparation rather than job placement. The program is cosponsored by the Department of Defense, Department of Labor and Department of Veterans Affairs.

Initial Counseling/Pre-Separation Briefing

The first step in the transition process is to attend the Initial Counseling/Pre-separation Briefing. This briefing is mandated by public law for transitioning military members and must be accomplished NLT 365 days prior to date of separation/retirement. (Exception to this timeframe: short notice separations where counseling must occur as soon as possible). It provides an overview of the Transition Assistance Program (TAP) mandates; transition benefits; and referrals to various service agencies. It is recommended you attend this briefing 18 – 24 months prior to separation/retirement. The earlier your transition preparation, the more successful you’ll be!

Separating Members
Initial Counseling/Pre-Separation briefings are held every Wednesday, from 0800 – 1100 hrs. Call 530.634.2863 to register.

Retiring Members
Initial Counseling/Pre-Separation briefings are held on the last Friday of each month (may vary), from 0800 – 1200 hrs. This briefing also includes a TRICARE for Retirees briefing from a Health Net representative. Call 530.634.2863 to register.

TAP Seminar
Attending the Initial Counseling/Pre-separation briefing is the pre-requisite to attend this monthly seminar. This seminar gives you the skills you need to pursue employment after your military service. Includes: career research tools, financial planning, VA Benefits and Services information; resume writing; interviewing; the job search process; social medials tools, etc.

Boots to Business: 2 Day Class

Military members pursuing self-employment in the private or non-profit sector will learn about the challenges faced by entrepreneurs, the benefits and realities of entrepreneurship, and the steps toward business ownership. Call 530.634.2863 to register.

Career & Credential Exploration (C2E) Track

The Career & Credential Exploration Track assists with establishing clear goals, evaluating training options, and building an action plan. Participants will complete personalized career development assessments of occupational interest, aptitude and work values that will provide them with a variety of tailored career recommendations. They will learn how to use certification finder web tools and other internet resources that identify licensed occupations and a military occupational code translator. Call 530.634.2863 to register.

Managing Your (MY) Education Track

Service members pursuing college education will receive guidance to prepare for the college application process. The Education track addresses such topics as identifying educational goals, education funding, and researching and comparing institutions. Upon completion of this track, service members will be prepared to submit an application to an academic institution, meet with a counselor from the institution, and connect with the Student Veterans Organization on campus. Service members will be able to meet with education counselors for individualized preparation as desired. Call the Education Center to register: 530.634.2525.

DOL (Department of Labor) Employment Track

The Employment Track assists members seeking employment with resume writing, interviewing skills, networking, labor market information and federal employment. Registration for this class will take place during the Initial Counseling/Pre-separation briefing.
